HPWA Gala Raises Over $10,000 and Celebrates a Community United for Conservation
by Trish O’Brien and Geri Williams
A stormy forecast could not stop HPWA’s community from coming together for an unforgettable evening in support of conservation. Although a nor’easter brought strong winds and rain to the area, the skies cleared just in time for guests to arrive at the beautifully decorated Bournedale Function Facility. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and celebratory as friends, neighbors, volunteers, and conservation supporters gathered to share laughter, reconnect, and strengthen their commitment to protecting our environment. By the end of the evening, the community had raised over $10,000 for HPWA’s Land Acquisition Fund, bringing us another step closer to preserving open space for future generations.
Special recognition goes to Trish O’Brien and Lynn Oertel, whose dedication and careful planning brought this wonderful event to life. Many HPWA board members and volunteers also contributed their time and energy, selling tickets, gathering donations, organizing auction and raffle prizes, and helping with preparations.
The evening began with beautiful music performed by cellist Claire Estabrook and violinist Rebekka Almond. As guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, they reconnected with old friends, made new ones, and exchanged ideas about the future of our environment. Adding to the excitement were 20 silent auction offerings, including a boat and kayaks, and more than 40 raffle prizes.
Our guest of honor, State Senator Dylan Fernandes, spoke warmly of HPWA’s accomplishments in raising awareness about water quality, educating our community about responsible stewardship, and working with the Town of Plymouth to preserve land for conservation. He praised HPWA’s land preservation efforts as both important and forward-thinking. In a wonderful gesture of generosity, Senator Fernandes donated his $435 winnings from the 50/50 raffle right back to HPWA! State Representative Michelle Badger and Select Board Member Bill Keohan also joined the festivities, mingling with guests and praising HPWA’s work.
Following a delicious dinner, Denise and Jack Kedian opened the dance floor with a song from their wedding, as everyone celebrated their remarkable 59th wedding anniversary. Coffee and dessert were accompanied by the excitement of raffle drawings and the announcement of successful silent auction bidders.
A special thank-you goes to Darin and Wendy Fabrizio and the entire Bournedale Function Facility staff, whose hard work and gracious hospitality helped make the evening so special. We are especially grateful for their generosity in offering HPWA a discounted rate or our gala, allowing more of the proceeds to benefit the Land Acquisition Fund. We also thank our talented Communications Chair, Beth Sobiloff, who captured the festivities in photographs and created a wonderful video commemorating the occasion.

Perhaps the greatest success of the evening, beyond the funds raised, was the wonderful sense of community that filled the room. How fortunate we are to live among neighbors and friends who come together so generously for a cause that benefits us all. The energy, conversations, laughter, new friendships, and thoughtful ideas shared throughout the evening were reminders of what makes our community such a special place.
To everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, or supported this effort in any way, thank you for making our first gala such a memorable success. Together, we are not only raising funds to preserve our land and waters – we are strengthening the community that makes those places worth protecting.
What a wonderful evening, made possible by wonderful people!
