Land Opportunity Fund
A special fund was established a couple of years ago by Board members specifically to accumulate funds to have ready if the opportunity occurs to help the Town of Plymouth purchase land for conservation in our watershed. This has previously worked well to acquire the Alper and Comassakumkanut Preserves. The HPWA donation is leveraged substantially by making a smaller (compared to Plymouth’s) contribution because Plymouth is then able to show Town Meeting that the land cost is being shared and is thus a relative bargain that merits approval by that body.
With the end of the tax year approaching, please consider making a donation to the Land Opportunity Fund. If you are over 70.5 years old and are required to take a minimum distribution from your IRA or other retirement funds, you can save the taxes on the withdrawal by sending a nontaxable charitable donation directly from your account to the Herring Ponds Watershed Association (HPWA) at Box 522, Sagamore Beach, MA 02562.
There are several parcels of land that are important to preserve to help keep our ponds and well water clean and safe. It would be so good to have a substantial fund available to help persuade the Town CPC to purchase one of these parcels when it becomes available.
Thank you for all your support of HPWA’s efforts.
Regarding so-called Qualified Charitable Donations (QCD) mentioned in the 2nd paragraph, there is an additional benefit beyond excluding the distribution from taxable income. Since it is excluded, it reduces AGI by the amount of the donation. A lower AGI in itself means a lower taxable income, but it may (likely will) also reduce your Medicare Part B premium from what it otherwise would be. The Part B premium is a function of the person’s AGI.
