Time for Herring Count 2025
by Lynn Oertel, Herring Count Coordinator
We are still in need of volunteers to count herring!!
Our goal is to double the number of counts we’ve had in past so we really need your help! The more individual counts we have the more reliable our population estimate will be.
Bring a friend and enjoy some time in the fresh air. Come again and bring another friend! Just be sure to leave at least 10 minutes between counts.
Counting is done every day from 7am – 7pm. It takes about 15 minutes of your time to perform the 10-minute count and then document your findings. You pick a block of time (7am-11am, 11am-3pm, 3pm-7pm) in which you will count on a day each week. We need new and experienced counters. Help is available for new counters.
Counting begins April 1 and ends May 31. Monitoring herring as they begin their annual migration is important to assess the viability of the herring run and has implications for our environment and the fishing industry.
To volunteer or ask questions, contact Lynn Oertel, lboertel@comcast.net, or 774-217-3178.
Let me know your preference for day of week and time block and I will confirm. Extra random counts are always welcome.
Thanks for volunteering!
