Time for Spring Cleaning in Our Watershed

May 13, 2023. Will you volunteer a couple of hours to pick up trash in your neighborhood? HPWA volunteers have collected roadside trash in the watershed the past few years, around 30 bags were filled last year.

The Herring will be Coming Soon.  Help Count Them!

We need your help to document the number of fish returning.  A count takes 15 minutes once or twice a week.  Only 10 minutes to count and a few minutes to log your data. A small commitment to generate data on an important species.

Herring Run Obstacle Course at the Herring Festival 2023, Saturday, April 22nd

HPWA will again host a herring ladder and slide activity for fun and hands-on learning about the herring life cycle. Setting up and supervising the 25-foot run is a labor-intensive task requiring a large number of volunteers over the 10 AM – 3 PM time frame.

Why we Need Vegetated Buffers

A vegetated buffer is a protective area of plants between a waterbody and human activity. It is a “living filter”, because it captures many of the pollutants that travel through. It is excess phosphorus in runoff that allows cyanobacteria, to grow exponentially to toxic levels.
